Serving the community since 1887

Director’s Message

Calvary, Springfield exists as hallowed ground dedicated to the respectful interment of our beloved departed family and friends. Our guiding principle, “Honoring Life On Sacred Ground,” is ever-present in our minds as we persist in service to our deceased loved ones and the families who come to visit and pray for cherished family members and friends.

In the footsteps of our predecessors, we are deeply committed to preserving the cemetery’s beauty, fostering an atmosphere of peaceful prayer and reflection. Over the years, these grounds have continually been enriched with beauty with the intent to promote a comforting spiritual atmosphere throughout this sacred ground.

We invite you to immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings of Calvary Cemetery, where we are dedicated to “Honoring Life On Sacred Ground.”

May the peace of Christ be with you always,

About Calvary Cemetery

Calvary Cemetery, located in Springfield, Ohio, was consecrated in 1887 as a parish cemetery serving the communities of St. Joseph and St. Raphael. In 2005, ownership was transferred to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, making it the second of two Archdiocesan cemeteries, along with Gate of Heaven in the City of Montgomery.

Calvary consists of 50 gently rolling acres, tucked away from the city of Springfield, in a rural setting away from the bustle of the downtown area. Views include soaring evergreen trees on Calvary’s sacred grounds and vast farmland of neighboring properties. Landmarks consist of numerous traditional upright monuments, flat and beveled markers, private mausoleums, and a small chapel that has undergone recent renovations. There are approximately 7,600 individuals laid to rest at Calvary. The cemetery is the resting place of some of Springfield’s historically notable families, including in a Veteran’s section, created during the First World War.

The care and maintenance of Calvary cemetery was trusted to the same family for more than 70 years. William Matthews began caring for the cemetery in 1949. Then, in 1990, his son, James Patrick (Pat), assumed responsibility for over 30 more years. Pat had worked and cared for Calvary Cemetery since he began helping his father at the age of 14. The Matthews family served the local community by laying their loved ones to rest for generations. Pat’s children and sister participated in these Corporal and Spiritual works for decades.

Calvary Cemetery is a quiet treasure in Springfield and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is renewing its interest and presence there, to meet the needs of new generation of Catholics in Springfield and the surrounding communities. These efforts will include additional staffing and office hours, facility repairs and enhancements, and renewed efforts to enhance awareness and service to the community.
